FOOD FOR THOUGHT

is a not-for-profit event that will place consumers in the shoes of those who form the foundation of the food pyramid: farmworkers. Those who attend the event will not only leave with a full stomach, but with a better understanding of the injustices to migrant farmworkers that happen in Raleigh’s own backyard. It will take place from 6:30 to 8 pm on Tuesday, August 4 at Dos Taquitos Centro in downtown Raleigh.

Our event will open with delicious food from Raleigh’s own popular gourmet Mexican restaurant, Dos Taquitos Centro. Angela Salamanca is partnering with us to provide a savory taco buffet for all guests!

At 7:00, two fellow interns will speak of their experiences growing up in farmworker households and spending their summers working in the fields, when their American classmates were relaxing and playing. A multimedia presentation will follow, raising awareness about the conditions that farmworkers here in NC are being forced to endure. Much of the footage and photography will be work of interns who have spent time in the fields this summer. Additionally, several interns who are from farmworker families will be present to talk about their experiences over dinner.

The dinner will conclude with a panel of everyday people from different backgrounds and professions who have each found a way to use their skills to contribute to the fight for farmworker justice. All dinner guests will have the opportunity to make direct contact with organizations and community members who are passionate about basic human rights being granted to everyone: citizens and non-citizens alike. Each guest will go home with a better understanding of concrete ways that they can contribute to bettering farmworker living standards, and hopefully a little food for thought as leftovers.
